about verve

‘Verve’ in French means enthusiasm in the field of art.
To us Verve means yearning, striving for artistic excellence, power and a kind of liberty to create… an inner melody
It means a conjunction of different attitudes, different personalities and different vibrations thus creating a resonance in a single direction... and certainly, that would be our aim, towards aesthetic and artistic goals.
We don't know where that goal is, but we have decided to move on. And this is what verve means, to us.

Minimalism : An Overview

Minimalism is the term generally used when talking of music or performance art , when applied to art minimalism was a reaction against the formal overkill and the pretentiousness of abstract expressionism
other names for the minimal art includes " abc arts , reductivism and rejective art . some critics initially thought they were dealing with outright fraud .. minimalist work seems to test the limit of art .. it is infact a very mature style of painting and sculpture, it is almost spiritual , the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features and core self expression. it stripps away all that is unrequired until all that is left is the bare " essence " or soul .
this art movement emerged in the late 1950's and flourished in the 1960's and 1970's with great artists like donald judd , dan flavin , carl andre , so lewitt and robert morris becoming the most important innovators. it had roots in pop art cubism and conceptual art and was also inspired from russian suprematists such as kasimir malevich
we usually think art depicts the real world or reflects an emotion or feeling yet with minimalism , no such attempt is made to ideologically represent the reality of the outside world ..it does not try to signify anything , it mearly exists- an object in it's own right . it is in a way abstract or considered as conceptual art "what you see is what you see" said the famous frank stella about his paintings.

The village Life
We went to a village called pirana 16 kms from ahmedabad on a sketching trip , the place has a mandir and a masjid in the same premises , it is an excellent example of religious co-existence . a few kms ahead there was another village which seemed nice and quiet. we made about 5 or 6 perspective sketches of the narrow lanes and houses at interesting angles . Observing people and things around opens up my mind to new thoughts and ideas. i took photographs of some birds in the area as well.

Vinod Patel arranging his work

The c.n college of fine arts, had an exhibition of artworks recently : paintings and sculptures of college students, alumni, and various eminent artists from the city were on display for bihar flood relief. The show was inaugrated in the presence of Haku Shah, Amit Ambalal , Ratilal Kansodaria , Devang Vyas , Suresh Sheth, and many other artists.

Good experience to have also put up our work for a cause.  few other upcoming artists like Vinod Patel  and Ronak Soparivala were also part of the event.

There is an immense enthusiasm in all the current students and a festive atmosphere on campus and stalls have been set up for their work according to their seniority to display their work.

We would like to congratulate the college principal and the professors , for organising such a wonderful show , and wish them the best for all their future endeavours...

There were four artists from verve that were part of the show : Margee Patel, Riddhi shah, Deviba Wala and Arpit Biloria and between us and are glad to have been able to contribute an amount from the sales of our work.

Sketching trip

Sketching : A great visual thinking tool

Everyday life on the streets through the eye of an artist

It's all about the line and form !

dog sketch, kankaria, pencil drawing, quick sketch, street dogs
kankaria, pencil drawing, quick sketch, girl and child

The installation project had kept us busy for quite a few days and finally it was time to get back to work , but for a change and to unwind we decided to go to kankaria lake for a sketching trip. We were instantly surrounded by about 12 children( we later discovered they were all from the same family wow! ). It was great making a family portrait for them and to see them beaming when they saw the sketches. Arpit sketched a few more children on the lake front , A dog snoozing in the busy street corner like it didn't care at all about what was happening around it or how much noise there was caught my attention..actually i always find the stray dogs interesting subjects. . we got hold of a flute seller and  then met two families who showed interest in our work and a young girl asked us portray her. we gave her the sketches which made her so happy . looking at that a begger child posed for us with her little brother and finally as we were leaving she ran after us screaming " aae manne mari parchi de" ... She wanted to keep the Paper.

Most artists i know started their careers doodling in notebooks or drawing away in the middle of lectures at college.  It is in fact a great way to capture an idea or to make a note of what you want to paint later, even the most basic of sketches work wonders when trying to communicate an idea.
they help explore possibilities or workability of ideas and are a handy reference.

Art Quote :

'To draw does not simply mean to reproduce contours; the drawing does not simply consist in the idea: the drawing is even the expression, the interior form, the plan, the model. Look what remains after that! The drawing is three fourths and a half of what constitutes painting. If I had to put a sign over my door [to the atelier], I would write: School of drawing, and I’m certain that I would create painters.' - Ingres

Installation at kanoria centre of arts

The International Tile Project Launch.

Exhibition and An Installation by us.

Collaborative art work.

arpit biloria
An installation using projectors

arpit biloria
the installation taking shape..

deviba wala
the many angels of surfaces that will act as canvas  when the three projectors simultaneously project onto it.

ahmedabad artists
just before show time ..

We(Arpit, Margee, Riddhi & devi: from studio verve) were invited for the launch of the tile project at kanoria on the 27th of this month,
The tile project had artists from all over the world work on specific tile sizes and set up a permanent display in a select few locations. Our work was added to a wall built specially for the event.  An exhibition and various installations by the artists working were on display at the kanoria centre for arts, there were a lot of art enthusiasts who turned up for the evening , there was a garb ; as navratri or the folk dance festival of Gujarat was around the corner ..We had an idea for the installation and we came up with a concept that we can all relate to. The idea was to show that art is inspired from and in return, inspires our daily lives…

The concept : a story can be narrated in a million ways. this installation does just that. a story is viewed from different angles. a work of art is various colours ,layers of texture, a mix of the art and the artist himself ,creating a thing of everlasting beauty .Some images last forever while some fade away . we live in parallel worlds: the conscious and the subconscious. our country too is diverse and rich in culture where facets of life varied as they are come together .the clips you see are from the streets of India running parallel with the art work and artists that were , artists that are and artists that will be…

title : art and life juxtaposed
medium: thermocol sheets, nylon strings, 3 projectors & bricks

the clips comprised of the city life , eminent artists and their work along with a few clips shot at our studio while we were at work. the clips, starting at different times were then projected onto the surfaces from different angles, one image in totality was never repeated due to the time lapse between the projected images.

Interpretations by deviba

A few lines that come to mind when i look at a painting.

Artwork has the power to stir up emotions.

Each individual has a unique view point and each will find their own interpretation !

 "eye to eye"
famous indian artist acrylic on canvas, 2007, 48" X 36"
Connecting Dots
a connection between this world and the next , if such a thing exists ...
a connection between who i am and what i used to be , if the rift is not too wide ...
a connection between a dream and it's silent death , even before it was born ...
a connection between being shut out and being let it , before my heart runs dry
a connection between life and the pain that ages us ,
a connection between being right always and being human,
a connection between bonds that tie us and a desire to be free.

-an interpretation on arpit's work

"balance sheet"

popular art studio
The Farmers account book :
hope kept me sane & drove me mad .
took a loan & worked so hard
to put on my plate, a life of regret.
calculations went their own way,
only help from god could save my day
they took my money in the name of interest
whose 'interest' is it theirs or was it mine...

-an interpretation on pramod's work.

"torrent"
famous indian artist
one of my many moods :
i feel nothing
a torrent, a copious flow of nothingness
no joy. no sadness.
no pain. nothing!
in my mind there's nothing
in my heart there's nothing
in my soul there's this quiet acceptance of nothing
no wanting. no desire.
no quest. no thirst.
no yearning. no longing.
nothing !
i expect from you nothing
all that existed is today : nothing
your proud love to me is nothing
no regret. no celebrations.
no contentment. no ambition.
no light. no shadow.
nothing !
no tears. no smiles.
no expressions. no stories.
nothing!

-an interpretation on my work "torrent"
